I have yesterday discovered that a small family of cats, the mother and three babies have just moved into my watering can in the open garage.

As there are babies I put out milk for them this morning and last night and this lunch time.

I am sure they are stray cats and I suspect the father is a black cat that lives close by.

Do you think I should keep feeding them milk and stuff ?

-- Posted by Colin on 7:32 pm on July 22, 2002

... as an aside ......  forgive me for asking .... but are Siamese cats common in Thailand ?

and are they called Siamese or do they have a distinctively different name ?

Back to the topic:

Yes, do continue to feed them milk and "stuff".  But be aware that they will become dependant and will rely on you for food. So don't give them too much if you feel that you can't maintain your charity.

But if you're like me, before to long, you will have adopted them as your own, and find yourself walking down the cat food aisle at a supermarket buying the most luxurious tin of tuna and haddock !!

-- Posted by scouser on 8:09 pm on July 22, 2002

Thanks Colin, do you know how much to feed cats ? Like how many bowls of milk a day and is a tin of tuna enough ? I do not actually have any cats but the babies are still very young !!

-- Posted by Colin on 9:56 pm on July 22, 2002

Cats, unlike dogs, will only eat when hungry. (Dogs will eat, and not stop eating, until they're sick !!)

My 'adult' cat only gets fed two small 100g tins of food a day. Then also supplemented with some dried 'complete' food. And fresh water.  (He never gets any milk.)

I'm sure the Kittens however will lap up the milk.
But how much milk should you give ?  As much as they lap up, I guess ?  As long as it is not being wasted, and turning sour in the heat.

You know that once you start feeding them, you'll have to give them names !!!

(Oh, what about the Siamese Cat question ?)

-- Posted by scouser on 10:03 pm on July 22, 2002

Personally I prefer dogs so I do not know about the Siamese cat question and hoping someone else here may know.

Thanks for the insight into the cats. After reading your last post I went out and gave them a tin of tuna, have noticed that the kittens only seem to like the milk in the morning and afternoon.

Will try and give them some other fish tomorrow morning and see what they do.

It is quite funny the kittens have found some old furniture that they use as a climbing frame and you hear the occasional plop as they fall off !! They seem to hide in there when the mother is out.

-- Posted by Kapow Guy on 11:25 pm on July 22, 2002

That is so cool Scous!! But you're not adopting the kittens, in fact, they've adopted you!

I don't think it's good to feed the kittens tuna yet. You hadn't mentioned how old they were but like young humans they can't digest solids too well yet and you might make them sick. Just guessing here.

As for the Siamese cat question that is so funny Colin!  No siamese cats are not found all over Thailand. You find lots and lots of stray cats but purebred Siamese cats you find them in pet stores and homes.  In thai they're called 'Maew Siam' which means Siamese Cat.

-- Posted by scouser on 8:23 am on July 23, 2002

Thanks KG won;t feed them any more tuna for a while.

What do they eat then ? Do they like spicy food ? Can I just buy a cooked fish and put it on a plate ?

-- Posted by maisuwai on 3:20 pm on July 23, 2002

scouser - suggest you don't feed them milk, but milk and water mixed.  Sounds strange , but pure milk is likely to make them sick (kittens AND cats).  How old do you reckon the kittens are ?  If they're still suckling, you don't need to worry about feeding them, just keeping the mother's strength up.  And if Thai cats are anything like Saudi cats, they'll eat darn near anything.

But before you make this a regular thing, are you prepared to adopt them, or is this just a passing interest ?

-- Posted by scouser on 3:36 pm on July 23, 2002

Thanks MS.

I saw them only the other day and the and the mother looks pretty beat up, thin with cuts and grazes on her legs and the kittens are really young. Yes they are still suckling, and do not seem to eat very much so I guess as you say they get all they need from the mothers milk.

I tried to give the mother some of my breakfast this morning (rice with penang moo and green chicken curry) but she would not touch it, so bought some cat food which she seems to like.

I do not know about adopting them, but just try and at least get the mother back in shape so she can properly look after them.

It would not surprise me if they just disappeared one day in the same way they came, but if they do not then that is fine.

Was thinking of taking them to a vets etc so at least the mother could get checked up but I think I will need a little more trust from her before that can happen. Especially as I just sprayed her with some anti flea and insect stuff which she did not like in the least !!

-- Posted by Kapow Guy on 4:32 pm on July 23, 2002

What makes you think a cat will eat your curry? Didn't you know that cats and dogs senses are so much more sensitive than humans? Same goes for their taste buds. Just go to the supermarket get some fish, pla thoo which is rather inexpensive, boil them and give it to the cat.

-- Posted by Colin on 6:58 pm on July 23, 2002

Cool !!

So a cat in Thai is called a 'Maew' .... is it pronounced 'miaow' ? :hihi:

Have you given the kittens names yet ?

May I suggest 'Maisuwai', 'Kapow', and '49er' !!!

-- Posted by maisuwai on 7:21 pm on July 23, 2002

Not quite 'miaow' - less of the 'ee' sound and more like a cat actually sounds.  There's a bar in Soi Nana Tai where I was chatted up by two girls called 'Maew' and 'Noo'.  It only struck me several hours later that I'd been talking to 'Cat' and 'Mouse' !

And no, you may not suggest 'Maisuwai' for a kitten - reserved for tigers only.

-- Posted by Colin on 7:17 pm on July 24, 2002

Easy tiger !

-- Posted by maisuwai on 7:57 pm on July 24, 2002

More like tigger, actually.

-- Posted by scouser on 9:03 pm on July 24, 2002

I had not thought of giving them names, the kittens have moved nextdoor and are now hiding in a more protective pile of furniture / general clean rubbish.

They only seem to suckle, so I guess they are too young to eat, but the Mum is already looking a lot healthier and seems to be getting friendlier (in fact a little too friendly as when you stroke her she lifts her ass stright up into the sky !!).

I am not sure what the neighbours will do but they seem so far to ignore the kittens, which I suppose is good. So for now am just feeding the mother.

-- Posted by Colin on 9:40 pm on July 24, 2002

You can't beat a friendly p ussy(cat)
!

Perhaps you should call her Elsa, after the orphaned lioness reared by George and Joy Adamson of the 'Born Free' fame.

Keep up the good work !

(Edited by Colin at 2:41 am on July 25, 2002)

-- Posted by scouser on 2:35 pm on July 26, 2002

I have a nagging suspicion that the neighbours have taken the kittens to a temple. I am only guessing but the mother has been acting really weird the last coupld of days, crying and not eating much etc.

Thailand has just had one or two days holiday and so the neighbours were in and I have not seen the kittens since.

I really hope that is not the case as the mother seems to be really sad and she is full of milk, so I do not know how the kittens are going to be able to be fed.

I might have to find a way of asking them (but they do not speak English) and find out if they have which temple they took her to, at least that way I can try and take the mother there too.

Surely on a heartless idiot would take the kittens away without the mother. But as I say I am only guessing.

Am quite **** off !

-- Posted by scouser on 2:36 pm on July 26, 2002

How fo you say in Thai - Kitten ?

and :

Have you seen the kittens ? Do you know where they are ?

Which temple have you taken them to ?

-- Posted by 49er on 5:06 pm on July 26, 2002

Scouser I have some bad news for you. Dogs go to temples not cats. If they did the dogs would get at them. They are gone and that is sad.

-- Posted by scouser on 5:47 pm on July 26, 2002

Well thankfully they are not gone, at least not all. The mother is around and so are one of the black kittens and the other brownish kitten. Unfortunaley, one of the black kittens I found dead with its neck broken, I can only presume that it fell awkwardly or something.

I am pleased at least they are still together, and it was a Thai that told me that cats and dogs get taken to temples when they are found on property.

-- Posted by Colin on 10:29 pm on July 26, 2002

Is it true or just an urban myth that several Chinese Restaurants in the UK were caught collecting cats for their chow miens !!

Ah, such a shame that one of the kitten's died from an accident. It must have fallen, or knocked by a car ?

How sad.

-- Posted by Kapow Guy on 1:15 am on July 27, 2002

Scous, you sure it's not you who might have accidentally stepped on the kitten while searching for your maid who was trying to get rid of the ants?

Actually, cats do get taken to the temples. They're all over the place and temple cats seem to be able to fend for themselves.

-- Posted by maisuwai on 12:50 pm on July 27, 2002

It's another urban myth Colin.  But with some basis in fact.  I recall a Chinese restaurant on Merseyside being prosecuted about 20 years ago, when Public Health inspectors found a freezer full of dog parts.

-- Posted by 49er on 4:15 pm on July 27, 2002

Point taken KG, I guess Thai dogs prefer a farung to a cat or a kitty!!!! :devilwink:

-- Posted by Colin on 6:25 pm on July 31, 2002

How are the kittens Scouser ?

-- Posted by scouser on 11:32 am on Aug. 1, 2002

Well I only got back early this morning but when I arrived the mother seemed to be in a bit of a mood, but then she came around and said hello. The kittens seem fine, but I am not sure what is going to happen later today when I get them vaccinated !!

Could have some fun and games with that !

-- Posted by Kapow Guy on 3:07 pm on Aug. 1, 2002

Keeping pets is a gamble with your karma.

Treat it nice and give it a good home you get plus points. Neglect it, cause it to get sick and your karma gets negative points.

But you're doing good so far scous. Have you named em yet?

-- Posted by scouser on 3:42 pm on Aug. 1, 2002

Well the vet arrives in a few minutes so shall be interesting to see how that goes. Somehow I do not think we will be able to do the mother, and I just hope she let's him get to the kittens !!

As for names, still toying with them, but am waiting to see if the kittens are boys or girls.

-- Posted by Kapow Guy on 3:53 pm on Aug. 1, 2002

Eh?! They've been around for a week and you can't tell the difference?

I think if you look at their undercarriage towards the rear axle you'll be able to tell whether they'd be tiggers or p****s.

-- Posted by Colin on 6:17 pm on Aug. 1, 2002

Trust me KG, it's not that easy to 'sex' a cat !

I don't know when their balls drop, and why on earth male kittens have little nipples that resemble female cats, but TWICE now we've had to rename our kittens from girl names into boy names !!

Princess, became Figaro,   and Phoebe became Alfie !!

Even the vet told us that Alfie was a girl !  We only discovered the mistake when we booked 'her' in to be spaded, only to be told that those testicles need to be cut off first !!!

:hihi:

-- Posted by zul on 9:15 am on Aug. 2, 2002

I am new here but want to say you should be careful with stray cats, they can have rabies and other diseases, plus they will never be a true companion or pet as their instincts are more primitive.

-- Posted by 49er on 11:31 am on Aug. 2, 2002

Zul, Have to disagree with you here. I have had two pet cats off the street. One had a broken leg that i mended with a popsicle stick and some tape. Hero was a hero, and would still be here if a street dog had not killed him. Blacky was a bit wierd, he came to eat and all, but he was as you say quite "primitive". Never into affection or the lot, and when it came time to move he was nowhere t be found. But I did find out he still goes to my old house for food. I drop off 200 baht a month to the new owner of the house to buy her plakapong and platu, so I guess she is still happy.

-- Posted by scouser on 9:22 am on Aug. 7, 2002

I am back ! But I have bad news, the kittens have gone. They disappeared I was told last Thursday night / Friday morning. Nobody knows where they are so I can only assume that  someone stole them and took them far away or they were eaten by an owl or they fell down the drains.

The mother seems ok now but I was told that she was very upset crying every day and going out to look for them.

So what started out as feeding the mother to ensure she would be strong enough to bring up the kittens has turned out to be just feeding the mother !

I am very sad about all this and if I ever find they have been taken by a human I will be very very angry. One of them was black with white paws and nose !!

-- Posted by maisuwai on 1:34 pm on Aug. 7, 2002

I've never seen a black human with white paws and nose . . . .

-- Posted by 49er on 1:43 pm on Aug. 7, 2002

Scouser, I reget your loss but MS I admire your humor, that one was a howler!!!! But did scouser set it up or are you a stand up comic????

-- Posted by maisuwai on 3:13 pm on Aug. 7, 2002

Only when I can stand (hic !)

-- Posted by scouser on 7:26 pm on Aug. 7, 2002

:hihi: good one MS, I left that one wide open !!

-- Posted by Lisa on 5:15 am on Aug. 8, 2002

Hello Scouser I think that you should take the mum cat to the vets and get her checked over and then giver her a name, something like Arabella....

It is a shame about the kittens though.

-- Posted by scouser on 3:11 pm on Aug. 8, 2002

Thanks Lisa - I do actually need a name.

Any other ideas ? She is white with brown and black markings, does not mind fighting and getting bloody in the process but is a little angel really.

-- Posted by Colin on 3:51 pm on Aug. 8, 2002

Call her 'Jolie'

A Tomboy, yet an angel(ina) !!

-- Posted by scouser on 4:57 pm on Aug. 8, 2002

Good one Colin - Angelina may be a good name !

-- Posted by scouser on 3:04 pm on Aug. 9, 2002

:hihi: I think she may be pregnant again (lol she has sex more often than I do !! :hihi: )

Anyone have any experience with pregnant cats, she does not seem to be eating a lot and sleeps all day !

I am thinking  of calling her Sylvie. But need some more ideas !!

-- Posted by 49er on 4:38 pm on Aug. 9, 2002

If the kitties were only 6 weeks or so she should not be preggers again. If she is call her "speedy"

-- Posted by scouser on 5:21 pm on Aug. 9, 2002

Well the vet said the kittens were around 2 / 2 and a half months old. I am not sure but she is either pregs or she is ill !!

-- Posted by Colin on 7:16 pm on Aug. 9, 2002

I don't think it's inconceivable for the cat to get pregnant so soon after having a litter.

As soon as the kittens stop suckling then I imagine she's ready for some more!

What about Charlotte (the Harlot !) as a name ?

Why Sylvie ?  Any significance or just a name the interests you ?

-- Posted by scouser on 8:43 am on Aug. 11, 2002

Charlotte the Harlot is good, the way she sticks here ass in the air would fit the name perfectly. Just had an idea (strange as have not had the coffee yet !) but what about Albi ? I quite like that.

-- Posted by 49er on 2:04 pm on Aug. 11, 2002

Why not compromise to Alibi, that way you can have an excuse for yours or the cats shall we say boo boo's!

-- Posted by Kapow Guy on 2:07 pm on Aug. 11, 2002

Har har har!!!! Good name "Alibi".

-- Posted by maisuwai on 4:31 pm on Aug. 11, 2002

I'd add my vote for "Alibi".  Neat !

-- Posted by 49er on 5:25 pm on Aug. 11, 2002

Scouser, in reality it does fit as I am always on your case for badgering the witness and interrogating postings. So Alibi is perfect!! But again its up2u!!

-- Posted by zul on 1:14 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

This is funny, alibi though sounds rather male, it is only the men that need alibi's right ? Women are always right !

-- Posted by scouser on 2:50 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Right now I feel like calling her "difficult to feed !!"

Colin you have a cat right ? This one seems to be soooooooooooo **** picky about what she eats. I bought her a whole fish yesterday and gave it to her, she sniffed, and walked in reverse (yes she is a talented cat!). She just would not eat it. Then a KFC delivery guy arrived next door and she started wagging her tail so I gave her some of my bbq chicken, which she eat immediately !

I did not realise cats were so picky.

I have been trying to feed here the good Whiskas stuff but I think she has been a stray so long she does not seem to like it.

Any ideas on what I should feed her ?

-- Posted by 49er on 3:44 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Scouser, believe it or not my cat Hero loved the canned sardines. Plakapong in thai.  A half can mixed with rice or believe or not bread and he was happy. Also the fish called platu he enjoyed alot. They usually come 3 to a little bamboo basket in the market. Cheap as well. He would never eat any tinned or dry cat food. As you said wild too long.

-- Posted by scouser on 3:50 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Yes I bought some canned sardines and will be trying that tonight. But they are covered in tomatoe sauce you think that is OK ?

-- Posted by 49er on 3:55 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Again those were my thoughts exactly but he seemed to think of the tomato sauce is cat gravy I hope yours feels the same. And as I said add a little rice for carbohydrates for her. Or leftover bread torn into little pieces. mush it all up.

-- Posted by scouser on 4:15 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Well will see what happens although I now know she likes chicken, as I say she did not even touch the fish yesterday even though she has eaten it before. What concerns me is that Whiskas contains a lot of minerals and vitamins vital for shiny hair, good bones, eyes etc.

If I feed her bbq chicken and sardines etc she won't be getting these.

-- Posted by 49er on 4:25 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Scouser yes she will, maybe not as much as cat food. But how many cats in Thailand do. I find that the oil in the sardines is fantastic for the coat. And how do the Japanese say so healthy eating only fish. I reckon the same thing goes for cats. Plus you can always add chicken livers or something. Right now my dog is on Chicken livers and rice. A 500 gram pack of livers is only 40 baht or so at Lotus. And this lasts him 5-7 days. He also get the leftover bones and bits from our meals.

-- Posted by scouser on 4:44 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Would you advise mashing them all up (the livers not the bones !) or just leaving them. Also do you feed them cooked or raw ?

-- Posted by Colin on 4:45 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Cats are incredibly picky with their food, and they do have a tendancy to go through phases, so don't stock up on a tonne of sardines incase one day she'll turn her nose up at them !!

I wouldn't worry too much about nutrients, as long as she's well fed, then she'll be fine.  As 49er said, the oily fish are very healthy for bones and and shiny hair etc

Unfortunately it will be a case of trial and error.

Obviously it would be far more convenient if you could find a tinned food that she'd like. Sardines would be perfect.

I'm lucky and my cat, Alfie, eats cat food, both meat and dried. Very convenient !

-- Posted by 49er on 4:55 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Colin you are so right about the cat being picky. Maybe the name "prissy" might go as well. Also Scouser he is right dont stock up on the sardines as you can buy them at any market from a hole in the wall to a hypermart. As for the livers. I boil them for say 5 minutes and then chop them fairly finely and mix them with rice with a little of the "stock"  that the livers were cooked in.

-- Posted by scouser on 5:03 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

Brilliant - thanks guys, will try the sardines tonight and see how they go and livers and stuff tomorrow !! I was rather hoping I could just empty the whiskas and voila !!

-- Posted by 49er on 5:22 pm on Aug. 12, 2002

No kidding scouser just shake the box a few times and that is it. But now you are into "food preparation" have fun!

-- Posted by scouser on 9:58 am on Aug. 13, 2002

Well she just loved the sardines, and I even threw some bread in there which she enjoyed. I boughgt her some chicken bits from the bbq lady and they went down very very well.

Only one thing, but does sardines contain anything that can make the cat super hyper ? She went wild after eating them running around like a kitten and climbing trees and the speed of light !! Weird never seen her do that before and she bit me !

-- Posted by 49er on 10:59 am on Aug. 13, 2002

Brother Scouser, she finally got the meal she was craving and went nuts from sheer joy. And remember she is a cat, and they do as they please, but I dont know about "biting the hand that feeds you". She should have the brains to be in about the same place and same time this evening when you go to feed her if she really like what you "cooked up". But its nice to have a happy ending as long as the bite was only slight.

-- Posted by scouser on 12:53 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

Nah the bite was not to bad but it was a full bite not just a little scratch. I think I should really get her in a box and off to the vets.

-- Posted by 49er on 1:54 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

Good luck on that one scouser, especially in a box. Try one of the plastic boxes that she can see through. Otherwise, you might go to the doctors for yourself before you have the chance to take her to the vets.

-- Posted by maisuwai on 2:11 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

An anti-tetanus jab mightn't be a bad idea scouser - specially if you haven't had one for a few years.  I'd hate to hear of you going down with blood poisoning.

-- Posted by scouser on 2:29 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

Might just do that in fact will call them later, as I went them to put her to sleep and do everything to her while she is asleep so I can bring her back and all she will hopefully remember is a (was going to say little **** but that sounds rude :hihi: ) small injection !

-- Posted by 49er on 2:49 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

You can put her to sleep, sing her a kitty lullaby as she passes out and she still wont forget who put her in that box or basket!!!  :biggirn:

-- Posted by Colin on 6:09 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

They say that cats who bite their owners do it out of affection !

It's an instinctive playful behaviour !

It still hurts though !!

-- Posted by maisuwai on 7:08 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

Funny animals, cats.  Isn't it strange that they have two holes in their fur - just where their eyes are ?

-- Posted by Colin on 8:01 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

Which pill did you pop today, maisuwai ?

I'd cut down on the red meat if I were you !

-- Posted by maisuwai on 8:27 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

Can't - I'm hooked !  And loving it.  Just the thought - cutting down INTO the red meat - aaaaaaah !

-- Posted by 49er on 9:21 pm on Aug. 13, 2002

Yup, you do seem a little bit on the "upside" today I must concur with Colin on that.  Sad to see that hilarious link get deleted.

-- Posted by maisuwai on 1:35 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

It's true - but not down to popping anything.  Just that having actually signed and submitted the letter of resignation has given me a great high.  It's all downhill now.

-- Posted by Kapow Guy on 2:34 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

Congratulations MS.... When you do settle in bangkok are you going to get yourself a cat, a duck, a soi dog, a scorpion or ants?

-- Posted by maisuwai on 3:01 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

Ants in the pants possibly !  Other 'pets' may come and go ! ! !  :rainbow:

-- Posted by 49er on 3:24 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

Hey wasnt this scouser takes the wild cat to the vet day?? No posts from him. I hope the little feline did not get the best of him!!  :devilwink:

-- Posted by scouser on 5:26 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

Hey congrats MS and best of luck on this new part of your life !

As for the cats, yes I took her today and we went to a much better vets than the last time, in fact comparing the two is hardly possible. She took it very well and was much better behaved than I thought and no she is not pregs so I guess that she is just very affectionate instead !!

-- Posted by 49er on 5:45 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

An old saying by an old poster. "why if thats not just the cats meow!!!

-- Posted by scouser on 7:18 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

??????

-- Posted by maisuwai on 7:41 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

Totally off subject - there's a bar in Pattaya called "The Cat's Meow".  Now there's interesting !

-- Posted by Colin on 7:44 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

That must be exactly the same as saying "it's the dogs b_ollocks"

It means that it was perfect.

No idea why though ?

(Edited by Colin at 12:46 am on Aug. 15, 2002)

-- Posted by maisuwai on 7:52 pm on Aug. 14, 2002

Kerreckt Sir !

Funnily enough, there's also a bar in Pattaya called "The Dog's **** " !

-- Posted by 49er on 8:51 am on Aug. 15, 2002

Yup the meaning is beautiful, or "purrfect" as the kitty would say!!

-- Posted by scouser on 9:56 am on Aug. 15, 2002

I need some new ideas on the food, she seems to have gone right off sardines now, and even chicken a little.

How often do you feed a cat ? How much, when and what ?

-- Posted by 49er on 11:44 am on Aug. 15, 2002

I feed my dog and fed my cats like this. Water all day, food evenings say 6 or so. And if I have snacks I would give them when I could. Say bones leftover from a lunch.
But once a day is enough for a main meal

-- Posted by Colin on 4:08 pm on Aug. 15, 2002

My cat gets fed a 100g tin of cat food in the morning, and the same in the evening, with dried cat food upon demand as a snack, and of course a clean bowl of water at all times.

He seems to be maintaining quite a healthy weight also under this food schedule. Not too fat, not too thin !

-- Posted by 49er on 4:17 pm on Aug. 15, 2002

I will bet you your cat is fat by Thai standards. But when I lived in the states we fed cats twice daily as well. Smaller portions than I give here.

Yes I have been feeding this one twice daily. But boy is she picky !! She was so skinny when she arrived she has at least put on quite a bit of weight which is a good sign and the doc said she was very healthy.

Next time I take her to the vets want them to give her a shampoo etc. Bet she has never had one, and bet she hates having it but am sure she will like the end result. You every washed a cat ?

She came inside for the first time yesterday, which was funny, but she was so nervous her little heart was going a million to the second !

I have not but my kids tried to give a bath to a 2 month old kitty when we were on Phi Phi. Our bungalow at the Phi Phi Princess resort was the home to a cat and her 5 kitties. They were a bit smelly so my twins aged 4 and a half decided to bathe them in the footbath you use to keep sand out of your bungalow. Well they learned that even baby cats can scratch and one still has a small scar. But it did not deter them. When told that you usually cant bathe cats they agreed. But they still want to go back and see their favorite kitty who they named "Little Runt". Even after the scratching I was still having to go on their insistance to buy milk morning and night for the kitties, and bring the leftovers from dinnner home to mom!!

The proper way to give a cat a bath:

Step 1. put a wire mesh in the toilet
Step 2. put in some liquid soap.
Step 3. Put in cat
Step 4. Close lid and sit on it.
Step 5. Proceed to flush the toilet.

Voila!

Good one KG !!

She is having raw steak tonight will see how that goes !! Read somewhere that they liked uncooked food as it is natural etc. But is better if it is frozen and then thawed so to kill parasites !!

-- Posted by Colin on 5:14 pm on Aug. 16, 2002

Wonderful ! :hihi:

That MUST be the only way to bath a cat !!!!

-- Posted by 49er on 5:16 pm on Aug. 16, 2002

Steak sounds purrfect. Domestic or imported?? Domestic she will be able to sharpen her teeth at the same time if its uncooked.

-- Posted by scouser on 5:19 pm on Aug. 16, 2002

:hihi: yeah and a small peice might last her all week. Actually this is one of my good French/Thai things. But if it goes well then will have a lot of chicken in the freezer after this weekend !

-- Posted by maisuwai on 2:05 pm on Aug. 18, 2002

Thanks for that KG.  Should be in every book of household hints !

-- Posted by 49er on 9:48 am on Aug. 19, 2002

Hey scouser we all have been waiting for 2 days on the update on "Ms. Purrfect Alibi's" dinner, how did it go??

-- Posted by scouser on 11:09 am on Aug. 19, 2002

Albi is a very difficult cat to please and she would not touch the steak, so I had it.

She won't touch anything raw it seems.

She is a very difficult little cat !!

-- Posted by maisuwai on 2:26 pm on Aug. 19, 2002

We have a continual plague of feral cats - the locals won't have them killed (the Prophet Mohammed had a cat !), and the nearest we can get is to have the sanitation contractor trap them, take them 100 kilometers away and release them.  Naturally it takes them about two days to get back here - and they breed like rabbits.

Sorry, getting off the point - which is that if they're REALLY hungry, cats will eat just about anything.  They only get picky when hunger isn't the issue.  Another thing I've noticed about (English) domesticated cats, is that they will literally eat until they're sick if they really like something.

Just a couple more things to bear in mind, scouser !

-- Posted by scouser on 2:34 pm on Aug. 19, 2002

That is good to know I have only just discovered what people were meaning by dried food. I couldn't work it out and thought those pellet looking things were supplements to whatever else you were giving her.

It works out that thise funny pellet things are the dried food and you just give her that She likes them but like humans  and wine gums, picks out her favourite colours !! (unlike humans she leaves the rest !!)

She has quite a good life though, sleeping 18 hours or so a day it seems !!

-- Posted by 49er on 2:37 pm on Aug. 19, 2002

Please tell me you are joking!! You had to have known about dried dog and cat foods. And even if you didnt could you not just read the package at your local supermarket. But as long as she is happy so are all of us!!

-- Posted by scouser on 2:41 pm on Aug. 19, 2002

Why should I have known ? I have never had a cat before.

I did read the packet but it does not say it is dried food that they go on about  in all the cat websites, it looks like Rabbit turd in nice shapes.

So I thought it was a supplement, that you mixed in.

Now however Albi has shown me she likes it, then that is what she gets, I know have tuna tasting rabbit turd, chicken tasting rabbit turd and the list goes on.

Dead easy to clean up after as well !

-- Posted by 49er on 2:50 pm on Aug. 19, 2002

Well the point is you sussed it out. Now what you have to do is begin shaking the box right before feeding so she gets used to the sound and comes a runnin. But it does make life easy, pour it out into the bowl. Then either sweep it up or chuck it out. Better than learning to be a cat gourmet!!!!

-- Posted by maisuwai on 4:52 pm on Aug. 19, 2002

Or save it for Colin - he's already into dog food, might fancy this stuff for a change !

-- Posted by Colin on 5:35 pm on Aug. 19, 2002

My pet food eating days are now behind me.

I joined the PFA (Pet Food Anon) and got tips on how to wean myself of the stuff.

Sun-dried Coco Pops were a poor subsitiute but I did it! and I've been clean now for over three years !!

-- Posted by 49er on 5:39 pm on Aug. 19, 2002

Colin, are you sure they were sun dried coco pops and not sun dried sheep dung, they look alot alike!! :devilwink:

-- Posted by maisuwai on 1:13 pm on Aug. 20, 2002

Only you could have thought of that comparison - almost put me off my breakfast !

-- Posted by scouser on 4:41 pm on Aug. 20, 2002

Does anyone know how to get cats to like humans ? With me she is fine, extremely affectionate, but she is petified of anyone else.

I think she was beaten by some bad people when she was young as she is truly petrified. Any ideas ?

-- Posted by 49er on 8:59 pm on Aug. 20, 2002

Scouser, she was bloody wild. Its survival of the fittest. The poor little thing was attacked by everything that could attack her. She will come along. People that visit you regularly she will except. But she will never be a truely domesticated cat. IMHO

-- Posted by maisuwai on 8:59 pm on Aug. 20, 2002

Only time will tell.

-- Posted by Colin on 9:38 pm on Aug. 20, 2002

Absolutely.

My mother feeds around a dozen wild cats near her house, only two have become tame enough to be picked up and stroked. Why those two out of a dozen ?

I guess cats have different personalities like everyone else.

But as 49er said, wild cats will never become truly domesticated. This is true. They will always carry that wild side with them, that pet cats never have. Doesn't stop them from being an affectionate pal though.

-- Posted by scouser on 10:48 pm on Aug. 20, 2002

I guess you are right and I am lucky to have found a stray that at least trusts me if no one else. I have not had her spayed yet though as am hoping for kittens again (still feel bad about the two that disappeared) and if that happens I want to have them in the house so that at least they are  safe. To do that though I need the mother to relax a bit more, around strangers.

-- Posted by 49er on 10:44 am on Aug. 21, 2002

Sounds like your only cure will have to be "Cat Valium if you have guests coming over. :devilwink: and a
Or perhaps she might like to lap up a little beer Chang to relax!!

-- Posted by scouser on 12:13 pm on Aug. 21, 2002

Had not thought of the Chang ! :hihi: If I have her that would definitely have to change her name to that's not my cat !! It affects me badly enough !

-- Posted by scouser on 3:28 pm on Nov. 4, 2002

Well I come back from some business trips only to find the cat has had kittens they are so small (about the size of a sausage roll) and their eyes are still closed, so they can only be one or two days old. Wow.

Now the question is what do you do with such young kittens, anyone know when you should inject etc ?

-- Posted by scouser on 7:12 pm on Feb. 6, 2003

Well just to keep you up to date. Cats are EXPENSIVE !!

I thought I was doing Thailand a service having the mother sprayed, but no it cost me around 3,000 Baht and now the four kittens which are called terrorist 1, terrorist 2, terrorist 3 yup you  guessed it ... Jane are all injected up to high heaven with everything you can imagine.

They think my very expensive oriental rug is the best scratching board since the tree was invented and as for my plants AHHH !! :hihi:

Good thing is they are all well and strong.

I have some sad news about my cat.

He was killed a few weeks back. Run over by a car.

He is missed. The house seems empty without his presence.

-- Posted by scouser on 8:34 pm on Feb. 21, 2003

I feel for you Colin, and am sorry I did not post that earlier.

Having now five (four small and one mother) terrorists to deal with I understand how attched you get.

My condolences.

-- Posted by Colin on 4:00 pm on Feb. 24, 2003

Thanks Scouser, I appreciate it.

-- Posted by scouser on 10:11 am on May 8, 2003

Does anyone know what cat families do  when the kittens begin to grow up ?

It seems that a while ago the mother started hissing at the kittens and half striking at them although not in an overly viscous way.

Now a few weeks on the mother has simply disappeared, the kittens are as naughty and as annoying as ever and seem fine.

Is it normal for the mother to leave like that ? Will the same thing happen to the four bundles of terror ?

Thanks !!

-- Posted by scouser on 6:56 pm on Aug. 14, 2003

Now the mother cat has gone away completely and only comes by now and again, and when she does she is always withoudt doubt in a vile mood she hisses at the kittens, at me at anything that moves really and once she has come in and eaten she just wants out. weird.

-- Posted by Colin on 7:53 pm on Aug. 14, 2003

Do you think she's ill ??

Anyone, strange you've resurrected this thread as I have had a new cat!

Well, what happened was, about a fortnight ago I was woken up around 2am by an argument outside my house. Once the row finished, and they had left, I could heard meaowing.

The following day we found a young cat (9month old?) sitting outside our house. Since then we've been feeding it, and he has gradually become more comfortable with coming in the house, and sleeping inside overnight.

He's now offically part of the family after we christened him Charlie.

-- Posted by scouser on 9:12 pm on Aug. 14, 2003

Hey Congratulations Colin - Charlie the cat - cool !!

I do not know if she is ill, next time she comes I have to stick her in a box and take her to the vets for her annual Rabies jab so I hope they will be able to tell but wow she is vicious, growling hissing etc. But she still remembers to come for some food but not every day which is maybe why she is so thin.

I had a big scare this morning, only three cats were waiting outside for breakfast and the dogs were out chasing one other and there was another dead cat further down the road but thanfully not mine.

You are a cat expert compared to me but how do you get them to behave i.e not destroy anything made of paper, kill any rugs they can find etc. ? Do you keep a litter box inside ?

My cats now sleep outside but I am concerned about them.

-- Posted by Colin on 5:22 pm on Aug. 15, 2003

Cat's are very difficult to train, compared to a dog, but you can teach them habits, and perform tricks for rewards.

As for stopping them from ripping the furniture to shreds there's not a lot you can do. Obviously if as kittens you've constantly told them off for flexing their claws they will eventually realise that they shouldn't do it. But cats are far more independent than dogs, and if they want to scratch they will.

You could try deterents. You can buy odour sprays or powders that are meant to make the fabric smell foul to a cat, but not so bad for us humans.

(We've bought a powder to stop our cat from fouling in our terracotta pots. It does the job and smells of lovely garlic & herbs !!)

Good luck !

Thanks for the tips Colin, I would love to have known about the smell thing for the plants, I had some nice Yukkas which were used and killed by the kittens when they were still in doors, the nice large rug has been removed completely.

The biggest problem is the wires, because they play fight a lot they get tangled up and brings things crashing and breaking to the floor.

So what sort of cat is Charlie ?

-- Posted by Colin on 5:43 pm on Aug. 15, 2003

Charlie's a cool dude of a tom cat !

A common tabby, with quite defined markings and a kind face.

He only has a week left as a tom cat as his little giblets are being snipped to stop him from straying 'n spraying!

-- Posted by scouser on 8:01 pm on Aug. 15, 2003

When I had my kittens spayed they were weird for two days.

Anyway glad to see he is now part of the family.
